| This exhibition
is put together of photos depicting the famous ancient trees in Estonia.
A remarkable number of old sacred trees and ancient trees with their own
legends have survived to the present day. Many of these trees are strikingly
tall or thick.
The trees on show were picked out as a result of the project Põlispuu (Ancient Tree), which was carried out in Estonia between 1996 and 1999 by the young environmentalist group Order of the Forest. Through many different ways, hundreds of people helped to find and describe the ancient trees. The research covered the entire Estonia, and in addition to physical data about the trees, folk traditions too were recorded. The present database contains descriptions of more than one thousand trees. The author picked the most striking among these and took pictures of them that now form the exhibition. The exhibition consists of a map of Estonia, stands with explanatory texts, and photographs. The map shows the location of the trees, texts on the stands tell about how the exhibition was compiled, about the Order of the Forest and the author. Each of the colour photos is also accompanied by a text, introducing the location and measurements of the tree, as well as its story. On the following pages you will find some of the photos from the exhibition. |
